Dan Bernitt's ToolkitWriter/Performer

Not connected to a project — nothing autosaves.

Default Voices
Stage Directions
Applied automatically to Stage Directions the first time a project opens without one already assigned — new scripts don't need this set up by hand every time. This preference is global, saved the same way as your API keys, and carries across every project. It won't touch a project that already has a Stage Directions voice — change those from Cast & Voices instead.
Beat & Pause
Silent gaps instead of spoken text
A Parenthetical (or any line) whose text is exactly "beat", "rest", or "pause" — with or without the parentheses — is skipped in Play Room as silence instead of being read aloud by TTS. "Rest" uses the Beat length. Applies everywhere, not per-project.
Preload
Preload upcoming lines
While a line plays, this many upcoming lines start synthesizing in the background so they're ready the instant playback reaches them, instead of waiting on the provider mid-scene. Higher numbers smooth out playback but generate (and bill) audio for lines you might not actually reach yet. Set to 0 to disable and synthesize strictly one line at a time.
Overlapping Dialogue
Overlapping dialogue (" / ")
Play " / " as a real overlap instead of stripping it
When a line's text contains " / " (slash with spaces on both sides) — the standard mark for one character interrupting another mid-speech — the next line now starts at that exact point instead of waiting for the first to finish, panned left/right like two people talking over each other. A plain slash without surrounding spaces (as in "either/or") is left alone and read aloud as written. Off by default: the mark is stripped from what's spoken and lines play back to back. Toggle from anywhere with the shortcut shown here — it isn't reassignable.
Edit Button
Enable Editing button behavior
Open a pure editor (no playback or takes) instead of Both
By default, Enable Editing switches to Both — playback and editing at the same time. Turn this on to switch to a pure edit mode instead, with no playback controls or takes visible.
FDX Export
Cues in exported .fdx
Include cues when exporting a .fdx file
Off by default, so a .fdx you hand off for printing or another reader doesn't carry your lighting/sound cues. Turn it on to keep them in — when included, cue lines are written bold and underlined so they stand out on the page. This has no effect on the separate LiveShowQ JSON export, which always includes cues.

Applies to the script text in Play Room only — this is about reading comfort, not formatting individual lines.
Line Type Shortcuts
Retype the current line with Ctrl/Cmd + number
While your cursor is in a line, hold Control or Command and press a number to instantly change that line's type — e.g. turn an Action line into Dialogue without touching the mouse. Both modifiers work on every platform, so use whichever's comfortable. Assign whichever digit you want to each type below (0–9). Note that some browsers reserve Ctrl/Cmd+1–9 for switching tabs — if a digit doesn't seem to work, try a different one or check your browser's shortcut settings.
Navigation
Character name entry
While typing a Character line, ←/→ cycle through the suggested names and existing "+ Add" prompt; Enter or Tab accepts whichever one is highlighted, then continues to the next line as usual.
Toggle the Outline panel
Click "Change…" then press the key combination you want — it's captured immediately, no need to hit Enter. Defaults to ⌘I on Mac, Ctrl+I elsewhere. Works from anywhere in the app, not just Play Room.
Show/hide notes to self
Click "Change…" then press the key combination you want. Defaults to ⌘/ on Mac, Ctrl+/ elsewhere. Shows or hides every note that has content, all at once — no need to click each one open. Empty note pins still open individually by clicking them, regardless of this toggle.
Open the Search panel
Click "Change…" then press the key combination you want. Defaults to ⌘F on Mac, Ctrl+F elsewhere. Works from anywhere in the app, not just Play Room.
Copy as Plain Text
Click "Change…" then press the key combination you want. Defaults to ⌘⇧C on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+C elsewhere — Shift is included on purpose so it never collides with the browser's own Copy. Copies the current line selection, or the whole script if nothing's selected. Also available from the Download menu.
Paste Formatted Text
Click "Change…" then press the key combination you want. Defaults to ⌘⇧V on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+V elsewhere. Reads plain text from the clipboard in the same character-name-on-its-own-line format that Copy as Plain Text produces, and inserts it as real script paragraphs (Scene Heading, Character, Dialogue, Parenthetical, Action) at the caret. Disabled in Rehearsal mode.
New Project
Click "Change…" then press the key combination you want. Defaults to ⌘N on Mac, Ctrl+N elsewhere. Opens the Library and jumps straight to naming a new project — the same "name it, then upload an .fdx or start blank" flow as clicking "+ New Project" there. Some browsers reserve this combo for opening a new window; if it doesn't fire, pick a different key here.
Open the Library drawer
Click "Change…" then press the key combination you want. Defaults to ⌘O on Mac, Ctrl+O elsewhere. Works from anywhere in the app.
Open Settings
Click "Change…" then press the key combination you want. Defaults to ⌘, (comma) on Mac, Ctrl+, elsewhere. Works from anywhere in the app. Some browsers reserve this combo for their own preferences; if it doesn't fire, pick a different key here.
Toggle Fullscreen
Click "Change…" then press the key combination you want. Defaults to ⌘⇧F on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+F elsewhere. There's also a small icon button for this in the top-right of the header. Note: a webpage can't detect the Fn key at all — it's consumed by the keyboard hardware before the browser ever sees it — so a combo like Fn+F can't be captured here. Your Mac/Chrome's own native fullscreen shortcut (Fn+F or Control+Command+F on most keyboards) works independently of this app and will always be available regardless of what's set here. While in fullscreen, a quick tap of Escape closes whatever panel is open (Search, Outline, etc.) instead of exiting fullscreen — you'll need to press and hold Escape for about two seconds, or click the fullscreen icon, to actually leave fullscreen. This is a Chromium browser feature (the Keyboard Lock API), so it may not apply outside Chrome/Edge/Brave.
Toggle Edit / Rehearse mode
Click “Change…” then press the key combination you want. Defaults to Option+E on Mac, Alt+E elsewhere.
